What is your Focus in Life!
So this morning you are focused on something for today and something for the future. What do you strive for? In the OT the following request by Solomon for how the future would play out pleased God. In the start of his life he had a focus that made eternal sense!!! Listen for what his desire was.
1 Kings 3:5-11 “In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee. And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in. And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;”
The start was great but unfortunately Solomons’ focus changed as life progressed. He later in life began to strive for riches and allowed the temptations of the world to be his downfall. Sounds familiar does it not? He left us with a valuable lesson to pay attention to. He had every spiritual and material blessing a believer would desire and need to be happy and content. He had everything the world could offer. More importantly he had God’s full support. His flesh gave into pride and the temptations of the world. Knowing that he had it all in the start and lost it we do well to listen to his last words of advise……………..so that we do not make the same sinful mistakes!
Eccles. 12:13-14 “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil”.
