Serving in Jesus’ Church…..

Serving in Jesus Church

Serving in the Church Jesus built and to a lost world is a most interesting topic. The biblical concept of His Church is where any two or more believers are gathering to worship and serve Jesus. No denomination is ever mentioned in scripture. What you want to be aware of is any church adding to the sacrifice of Jesus life for our sins is not one of Jesus churches. Even if they include the name of Jesus in their documents. The church was designed by Jesus and started with His Resurrection and His sending of the Holy Spirit to indwell His Church.

Once you have placed yourself in a local church by being ‘born again’and that Church is Christ centered then the question becomes how, where, when and for what reason should I serve? It’s a given that Jesus wants you to serve Him in His Church. Listen to the following examples.

There are obstacles to having a servant’s right attitude. Don’t allow this to hinder your service. Jesus points out attitudes not pleasing to Him if and when we do decide to serve.

Have you ever heard someone say, ‘so and so is not doing their part so why should I cover for them?’ Scripture records some examples of this.

John 21:21, 22 “Peter, seeing him (John) said, ‘ But Lord, what about him?’ Jesus said to him, ‘If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”

Luke 11:38b-42 “…and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she has a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.’ And Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.’ “

When our eyes move from serving Jesus to serving self we fall into some of the fleshly traps like Peter and Martha did. But remember, both of them took the challenge to change and became strong servants for Christ. So there is always hope and room for repentance, forgiveness and getting back on track.
I’ve also heard the logic, “My kids no longer attend that ministry so it’s time to let the parents of attending families to do their part”. That is service with a wrong motive.
Do not be deceived there is only one good reason to serve and that is to bring glory to the name of Jesus!!!!! Excuses do not wash with God.

Solomon’s summary of life as inspired by the Holy Spirit applies here.

Ecc 12:13 “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments.”

And the Holy Spirit’s directive in Luke also applies;

Luke 9:23 “If anyone will come after Me, let them deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow Me.”

And for the final and best example of why to serve listen to what Jesus said about serving;

Mat 20:27, “28 And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave– just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

If you are not serving, it’s time to get busy!!!!!
