Joshua 23:12-16 “Or else, if indeed you do go back, and cling to the remnant of these nations—these that remain among you—and make marriages with them, and go in to them and they to you, know for certain that the Lord your God will no longer drive out these nations from before you. But they shall be snares and traps to you, and scourges on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land which the Lord your God has given you.”
Joshua knowing the weakness of Israel recorded God’s commands. We have the same fleshly weaknesses today. He called the people together and gave them these commands from God;
- Follow all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses without turning aside.
- Don’t associate with pagan nations or worship their gods.
- Don’t intermarry with the pagan nations.
Many say well that was for OT Israel but not for NT times. Really, listen to the NT commands for the same marriage requirements from God and remember we have the same God they did. He has not changed nor have His standards or the consequences for disobedience.
II Cor 6:14 “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?”
In a marriage sooner or later and hopefully sooner, how I worship God affects the realtionship. When it does typically the believer will compromise his or her beliefs. What they forget is that God will never compromise or change His commands. Being unequally yoked can only bring disaster.
